I have written this page to guide the less technically-inclined EELS fans of the boards and 'net through how to connect to the so-called FTP servers, hosted by me, Seventh-Monkey. If any parts of it don't make sense or you're stuck then please accept my apologies and tell me about it!
Please ensure that you read all of this guide if you are at all unsure on using FTP!
The FTP server is a repository of bootlegs and rare tracks collected and assembled primarily by SSS and members of the EELS community. Anyone is free to contribute as detailed at the end of this guide. The FTP servers do not feature EELS album tracks.
FTP is one of the very fastest ways to transfer files of significant size. However, to use it, you need a special program, in the same way you need a browser for the web (Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox, Safari). Most browsers nowadays can also handle FTP, but usually do a very poor job. Internet Explorer often confuses users on mine by deciding to connect twice, and other browsers do similar things. Also, most of then don't allow you to contribute to our collections by uploading files yourself.
For these reasons I strongly recommend getting yourself a proper FTP program. In this guide I will help you through connecting with SmartFTP, which is a program available completely free here. Download and install this and then I shall explain what to do next.
Note that you can only download one file at a time using FTP, and you cannot simultaneously upload and download when only connected once.
Now open SmartFTP. You will be presented with something like the following (click the image to see a full-size version in a new window):

The text boxes at the top of the screen are already filled in in this screenshot with the details repeated below. These are almost invariably the only fields you need complete to have access to EELS galore!
As you can see, from right to left, these should be filled in like this to connect:
Address: seventhmonkey.zapto.org
Login: eels
Password: raresongs
Port: 21
Hit Return or click the "Connect" button on the far left of the toolbar, then navigate to a directory you wish to download from by double-clicking them in the right-hand pane of SmartFTP. When you find a file you want, right-click it and you should be presented with this menu (click to enlarge):

Select the item illustrated and choose where you want to download the file to. You can select more than one file by holding CTRL and clicking on the next file to select; it is then posssible to right-click any one of them and download them all automatically in sequence in the same way.
To contribute on my server, just login as normal and go to the Uploads directory. If you want to drop me a message and can't e-mail for whatever reason, you can upload, say, a text file or a Word document into the Messages directory (nobody can download from there).
I will promptly move new uploads to an appropriate place.
Please don't upload:
As these will be deleted. If you do send me something special, drop me a line too so I can thank you.
